GRACE & FRANKIE!

Hello beautiful people, a new week, one more day, what have you been doing? Have you seen anything new? My girlfriend hooked me with a tv show that breaks all the parameters of the series that have been broadcast in these years.

Grace & Frankie is an original Netflix American television comedy released on May 8, 2015. The series was created by Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris and stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

SYNOPSIS

Grace is the retired director of the cosmetics company she founded and Frankie is a hippie art teacher. Their respective husbands Robert and Sol are partners in a successful San Diego divorce law firm. The lives of the two women become more complicated when their husbands announce that they are gay.

The two women leave their own homes and are forced to live together in the beach house that both couples bought years ago, now they must deal with their divorces and how to advance to the next chapter of their lives.
CAST

Jane Fonda-Grace: An independent woman with a business, with an ideal life but without happiness, she does not like to share her feelings and is seen as hard and cold.

Lily Tomlin-Frankie: Free, hippie, a soul full of love, with very strong convictions and ideals, she is an artist, she can be seen as Grace's counterpart, but also as her support.

Sam Waterston-Sol: A relaxed man, lawyer, a free soul too, in love with life, even though he knows what he wants, he can be insecure at times.

Martin Sheen-Robert: He is who has the most character and temperament, can be seen very cold and authoritarian, his marriage to Grace was always seen as a business.
Hand in hand with smart scripts, innovative themes and a cast in which chemistry and good vibes reign, Grace and Frankie is one of the most celebrated original productions of the streaming giant.

And although it never falls into cynicism, the show is not afraid to tease the “new age”, the assembled families and the stereotypes of progressivism. Furthermore, it shows the problems that mature women face in a world that prefers youth and superficiality.

It seems to me that one of the successes of Grace and Frankie is having a perfect casting, which is recognized by the public and critics. The series has received seven Emmy and one Golden Globe nominations, and its secret seems to be that they all get along well.

One of the most important things about this show is that it passes the BECHDEL test; For those who still don't know what it is and what it consists of, it is a system to assess the gender gap in movies, series, books, plays and other cultural products. It was popularized with the comic "A caring lesbian" by Alison Bechdel, although the invention of the test is attributed to Liz Wallace, a friend of the author.

What is important are the requirements established to create an equalitarian story:

1) At least two female characters with their own names must appear.
2) These characters have to talk to each other at some point.
3) This conversation must be about something other than a man.
Without a doubt Grace & Frankie is one of the most feminist shows of this time, it reinvents itself day by day, giving us a look at what life is like after 60, what are the fears, pleasures and dreams of an older person, this characters deal with the stigma of age, how difficult it is to try to break the paradigm and continue living as always when half the world tells you that you cannot do many things because you are old.

It's worth looking at and having a good time with each chapter of this awesome series.

XOXO Li.

  1. 'Grace and Frankie' has the potential to be something very, very special. Fonda and Tomlin create a great atmosphere that leaves you glued to the screen. They also have everything in history, super serious themes and very funny themes.
